⒞ Yokohama Nohgakudo
On the Noh stage, no scenery shifts from one play to the next, nor is there a curtain to conceal or reveal. Only a single panel remains—the kagami-ita, bearing the image of a green pine. Its presence suggests that everything capable of casting shade, and thus of creating illusion, has been excluded. To disturb this deliberate austerity, to make anything occur at all, is a task of rare difficulty.

the face is relatively slender with thin lips, and the near absence of facial hair suggests it was painted when the king was around 19 years old.

presumed portrait of King 순조 at age 19. Collection of the National Palace Museum of Korea. While in storage in Busan during the Korean War, most of the face—except for the area below the nose—was lost in a fire in 1954.
